Even after his head was shaved, the better to fit the electrode, Jones told me with great conviction: “I’ll never die in the chair, Don. You just wait and see. That telephone will ring from the warden’s office. I know it!”. And Jones was right! He was walking through the green door, the electric chair squatting not three feet away, when the telephone on Death Row rang. Governor Allan Shivers had called the State Board of Pardons and Paroles, and the board had recommended a three-day stay to further study the case.
Three nights later the telephone refused to speak. Jones tossed it a reproachful glance, then walked to the chair and was executed.
