He stood the egg on the counter and it fell on its side. He tried the trick again and again, each time rolling the egg between the palms of his hands and saying the words regarding the wonders of electricity and the laws of gravity. When after a half hour’s effort he did succeed in making the egg stand for a moment, he looked up to find that his visitor was no longer watching.

si accorge di come il proprio nucleo tenti di migrare verso il polo animale. la prima divisione si avvia verso la base ancora calda dell’uovo, si estende lentamente come dopo la schiusa nel tegame, arriva a toccare il polo sud, le terre verdissime di cellule una volta intere e ora rimaste così sole. riconosce di non causare alcun squilibrio agli altri, rivedendosi uguale a ciò che era in precedenza2.
una seconda scissione del sud comincia al polo animale, poco distante dalla cucina del monolocale: essa si apre perpendicolarmente alla prima, senza scolli o inserimenti, dentro il baratro, nel vuoto pneumatico dell’inoculazione. dimezza tutto. prova a reinserire i pezzi ugualmente, consultando il libretto di istruzioni. non sa che fare3.
la terza scissione avviene all’equatore, a diecimila chilometri da lui. non si svolge al centro, ma si accorge di come si avvii con tenacia verso l’embrione, restando vicina al polo animale. sa che dove i piani di sfaldatura delle due divisioni precedenti completano l’incrocio, esso resterà per sempre irregolare. i piani non hanno ancora terminato la loro escursione nel citoplasma dell’emisfero vegetale. si tranquillizza, constatando la non completa agglutinazione delle proteine4.
l’esplosione delle cariche si verifica nella terza vertebra, davanti al lobo temporale superiore. la scissione equatoriale separa l’embrione nei quattro cardini del vento, in stallo vegetativo. questa scissione crea dei disuguali: le principali regioni embrionali si dividono rapidamente nell’emisfero animale, le secondarie se ne vanno, rallentando la propria corsa solo in prossimità dell’emisfero vegetale. estrae dall’acqua le mani e rompe il guscio5.
rialzandosi da terra guarda l’embrione. si tratta di un volume cavo, proporzionalmente inferiore all’emisfero animale. il soffitto di casa, adesso, è costituito da più di uno strato di calcite. diversi inserti del pavimento, sollevatisi per via della detonazione, sono innestati a ridosso delle pareti. avverte come questa cavità permetta una migrazione incontrollata delle cellule6.
cerca di prevenire le interazioni separando le cellule una per una. invece che differenziarsi, esse provano a ricomporsi a causa della sua presenza. si sente come qualcuno che non ha niente fra le mani. sa che molte cose vengono generate senza grande consapevolezza. cerca di farsene una ragione. dopo aver visto con i propri occhi tutto questo, pensa di non aver capito niente. sa per certo di non esserne così sicuro7.
